ALA Youth Media Awards . . .

This morning, I watched the Youth Media Awards live via Webcast. For those who are not children's book junkies, these awards are akin to the Academy Awards for film, and people in the industry get very excited about it.

I'm delighted with the winner of the Newbery Medal: Dead End in Norvelt by Jack Gantos because it's FUNNY! The first scene was so outrageously hilarious, I had to read it to Hubby then reread it myself a few times.

It's fun to check the Amazon ranking of the winning book when the award is first announced (27,051) and the ranking as I write this (45). Yeah, a little thing like winning the Newbery has a tendency to do that to a book's ranking.

I love Jack Gantos' books from Rotten Ralph to the Joey Pigza books to A Hole in My Life. And I'm delighted that his novel Dead End in Norvelt won the 2012 Newbery. (I'll bet his speech this summer will be wildly entertaining.)

Here he is at the 2011 National Book Festival (being wildly entertaining) . . .

The two Newbery honor books were Breaking Stalin's Nose by Eugene Yelchin (an absolutely terrific book that's highly illustrated) and Inside Out and Back Again by Thanhha Lai (which also WON the National Book Award).

John Corey Whaley won the William C. Morris Award for a first-time author writing a debut book for teens for his novel, Where Things Come Back. This novel also won the Printz Award for excellence in literature for young adults. Can't wait to get my hands on this one . . .

This from Kirkus Reviews: "This extraordinary tale from a rare literary voice finds wonder in the ordinary and illuminates the hope of second chances."

I was so happy to see Wendelin Van Draanen's The Running Dream win a Schneider Family Book Award -- books that embody an artistic expression of the disability experience. Wendelin's novel kept me up late one night because I had to keep reading to find out what happened next. A beautiful book.

And fellow Florida writer, Greg Neri, snagged an Odyssey Award for best audio book for his terrific, highly illustrated book -- Ghetto Cowboy. (Illustrations by Jesse Joshua Watson.) Neri's dramatic story illuminates a part of Philadelphia's history I knew nothing about, despite being a native. Neri's books fill a need. They should get in the hands of as many young readers as possible.

Now, I can get back to writing my own books . . . as visions of the awards dance in my head.

Basketball Season . . .

Our son loves playing basketball.

For years, he's played in the driveway with Dad, at neighborhood courts and at school.

Here's Jake two years ago, when Dad was still able to beat him . . .

This year, Jake joined the inaugural class at a most amazing high school -- Oxbridge Academy of the Palm Beaches. Not only does the school provide exceptional educators and support staff, healthful meals and snacks, the latest in technology, a caring community and amazing opportunities -- like the chance to meet and interact with scientists, astronauts and Holocaust survivors -- they offer tons of sports, including the one Jake has enjoyed for years -- basketball.

Last night was the team's final home game of the season . . .

I'm happy to say they ended the game with a win. Go, Thunderwolves!

It's not a game until the uber-talented Allison Taylor belts out her rendition of the Star Spangled Banner. Allie has a superstar voice!

FL SCBWI Conference in Miami

One-word description: Inspiring.

A few more words: Even though I've attended the FL SCBWI Conference nearly each of the last eleven years, this year I hesitated. Do I have the time? Money? Then I remembered that at one of the conferences, instead of taking notes during a speech, I began scribbling ideas that became my novel, HOW TO SURVIVE MIDDLE SCHOOL.

When my good buddy Jill said she'd drive, I was in!

To say that speeches by Lin Oliver, E.B. Lewis, Greg Neri and others inspired me would be a vast understatement.

There's something magical about the energy created by a room full of creative people. I knew a quarter way in it was clearly worth the time and money.

The Editors Panel Discussion

Sometime during Lin Oliver's amazing speech, while I was taking notes so fast my hand hurt, it happened again. IT HAPPENED AGAIN! I scribbled an idea I think will be my next middle grade novel.

Thank you Linda Bernfeld and the many hard-working, dedicated volunteers (I'm talking to you, Laurie Taddonio!) who helped make the magic happen for the 11th year in a row!

On World Read Aloud Day, several children's book authors will Skype with students and read to them from their books FOR FREE!

I participated in this wonderful event last year, the event's inaugural year. Virtually, I visited six schools in five states, without ever getting out of my bunny slippers. Read about it here.

HAPPY HOLIDAZE . . .

Our seventeen-year-old and almost nineteen-year-old woke us this morning, like they did when they were little. Except this time it was because they were excited to give us gifts they bought for us.

Our oldest bought me a lovely teapot because I don't write without a steaming mug of herbal tea beside me.

And our younger son filled a basket with our favorite food and drinks.

Hubby knocked it out of the park, as usual, and got me something I will really enjoy . . .

A purple bike -- just like my sister and I shared when we were kids, well, except that one had a sparkly banana seat and a flowered basket for library books. I got my first real bike from my mom when I was 14. Now, at 46, this is only my third bike. Can't wait to ride it!

And here's a closeup of the shirt Hubby snagged for me from the Newseum in D.C. . . .

It's true, especially when the food is chocolate chip mint ice-cream.

Oldest son and I each got my hubby an e-reader. Oops. A Kindle and a Nook Color. Which one should he keep?

Our faraway family sent gift cards and books and all manner of goodies. And mostly love.

Even the pups got things to chew on and chase. The cat snubbed her new catnip toy as all regal felines must.

I was happy to have all my guys home with me, even the four-legged ones.

Forty years ago, Lin Oliver and Steve Mooser, noticed something was missing -- a community of children's book writers (and eventually, illustrators) who support, educate and inspire one another.

So they went about the business of creating it.

When they started S.C.B.W.I. (SOCIETY OF CHILDREN'S BOOK WRITERS AND ILLUSTRATORS), Lin and Steve couldn't have imagined the people around the globe they'd positively impact . . . or how hard those initials would be to pronounce. "Scubahwi?"

1. I connected with my uber-agent, Tina Wexler, from International Creative Management through the S.C.B.W.I. message board.

2. Jay Asher's dreams came true. Did you know that before Jay became a best-selling author, he won S.C.B.W.I. creative writing contests and grants with his funny, clever entries?

3. Bruce Hale, author of the popular Chet Gecko series, met his agent, Steven Malk, at the S.C.B.W.I. conference in L.A. in 1998. (That's the same year that Steven Malk connected with Sonya Sones and acquired her fabulous novel in verse, Stop Pretending: What Happened When My Big Sister Went Crazy.)

4. Debbie Ridpath Ohi, illustrator and writer, exuberantly shares how S.C.B.W.I. made her dreams come true in this YouTube video:

5. With international reach and local critique groups, S.C.B.W.I. is helping make dreams come true every day.

RAISING THE BAR . . .

6. Thanks to the standards, education and support of this organization, the quality of children's literature has increased exponentially.

7. If writers or illustrators are members of S.C.B.W.I., an agent/editor/art director knows they have taken at least one giant step toward professionalism.

8. It's good to have the combined muscle and companionship of a huge, world-wide organization. It makes one feel less alone in an inherently lonely profession.

9. With master classes by Tomie dePaola and Richard Peck, one can't help but improve one's craft. (I shared the Richard Peck DVD with our local critique group, and it was a big hit. "Pass the popcorn, please.")

OPPORTUNITIES . . .

10. As S.C.B.W.I. grows, they try to provide opportunities for the pre-published and the published. Their newest offering is a grant for students studying illustration to attend conferences.

11. The year I was nominated for the Sue Alexander Award, I'd never felt so much validation. Thank you!

12. Speaking of opportunities, in an effort to recognize an often ignored genre of children's literature, S.C.B.W.I. created the Sid Fleischman Humor Award.

13. And I had the great pleasure of winning the award in 2009 for my book As If Being 12-3/4 Isn't Bad Enough, My Mother Is Running for President!

14. S.C.B.W.I. flew me to L.A. to accept the award. You'd think I'd be nervous giving a speech in front of 1,000 people, but they were my people. My community of children's book lovers. And it turned out that surrounded by my community and my friends and family, I had the best weekend of my life.

15. There are so many grants, awards, etc. available. Did you know that Ruta Sepetys's novel, Between Shades of Gray, is now a New York Times best-seller and has received 4 starred reviews . . . and in 2007, Ruta won an SCBWI Work-in-Progress Grant?

16. Three years before that, Cynthia Lord won a Work-in-Progress Grant. She went on to write several books: Touch Blue, Hot Rod Hamster, Happy Birthday Hamster and her Newbery-honor-winning book, Rules.

17. Which grant or award will have YOUR name on it?

NATIONAL CONFERENCES . . .

18. I had the great pleasure of attending the national summer conference in L.A. three times -- 2001, 2005 and 2009. And I hope to get there this year, too. Don't forget the New York conference, January 27th - 29th!

19. At the conference in 2009, I met amazing people like Karen Cushman, Ellen Hopkins, Varian Johnson and Mary Hershey. The authors, illustrators, editors and agents are all so accessible at these conferences!

20. I remember hearing Sherman Alexie's opening talk and thinking, "Well, I could leave right now and I've gotten so much out of this conference." But of course, there was more. Much more!

21. Dove Bars. Yeah, S.C.B.W.I. is like that. Served those delicious treats between sessions.

22. And crazy, wild parties. The D.J. at the party I attended said, "Who knew children's book authors and illustrators were such a wild bunch?" Hadn't he ever read Where the Wild Things Are? The wild things are at S.C.B.W.I. conference parties!

LOCAL CONFERENCES . . .

23. While S.C.B.W.I. has a global reach, it's the local component that gives members access to great resources, like critique groups, meet-ups and conferences. (Check out regional events here.)

24. I floundered for years after I moved from Philadelphia to South Florida. Where were my people? More than a decade ago, Linda Bernfeld, Saundra Rubiera and a group of dynamic volunteers put on an amazing conference with excellent speakers in a school cafeteria -- serving lunch and dessert -- all for $35. I had found my tribe.

25. I've gone to nearly every annual Florida conference since, watching it grow and flourish.

26. It was at the regional conference that Sid Fleischman reached over and touched my arm and said, "That was a fantastic speech you gave." Sid Fleischman! I'm so, so grateful I got to meet this kind, gentle and generous man.

27. It was at the FL regional conference that I heard Linda Sue Park talk about story structure -- point of view, showing, not telling, first person vs. third person, etc. (If you want to hear Linda Sue Park and Rebecca Stead talk about winning the Newbery Medal and other stuff, check out Katie Davis's Brain Burps Podcast.)

28. I had the good fortune of attending a workshop about character building with the late, great Paula Danziger. I share Paula's gem when I teach my quirky character workshop: "What is your character hiding in his/her closet?"

29. I've presented at regional conferences in New England, Pennsylvania, Michigan and Florida. Each has its own flavor and vibe. Hard-working regional advisers and volunteers make it all happen.

GIVING BACK . . .

30. The Bulletin is brimming with information, articles and great artwork. You can contribute articles and artwork to The Bulletin.

31. S.C.B.W.I. members find unique ways to give back. The Fairy Godsisters (Thalia Chaltas, Valerie Hobbs, Mary Hershey, Robin La Fevers and Lee Wardlaw) pooled their resources to provide an annual scholarship to the international conference as a way to give back for several years. Jay Asher has done the same.

32. Want to help bring an author to a school that can't afford an author visit? Consider donating to the Amber Brown Grant.

33. Want to help fund a scholarship for someone to attend one of the summer or winter conferences? Consider honoring someone by donating in his/her name to the Tribute Fund.

35. When Sylvia asked Linda Marlow and me to run our own S.C.B.W.I. critique group in the Palm Beach Gardens, we said, "Yes!" Seven years later, our group of compassionate, talented writers and artists is still going strong . . .

36. Linda Marlow and I volunteered to drive speakers to the FL regional conference. We picked up Arthur Levine -- author and publisher -- a real mensch. He asked about my new book -- How to Survive Middle School -- and I told him how my Jewish main character wanted to the the next Jon Stewart, but first had to survive 6th grade. Arthur invited me to speak at the BK Book Festival he helps put on every year to benefit his synagogue and local bookstore, Watchung Booksellers. I combined the event with a couple school visits and had a great time!

COMMUNITY . . .

38. S.C.B.W.I. is the most generous community I know of. Steve and Lin began that spirit of generosity, of living and learning and passing it on. Now, thousands of people around the world continue that tradition of providing help and hope.

39. I've left every conference I've ever attended (both international and regional) with at least one new friend. (Hi, Margie, Lisa, Melinda, Gail, Carole, Katie, Ena, Paul . . . )

40. The wonderful people I've met through my local S.C.B.W.I. critique groups are among the most precious in my life. They enrich my life daily.

A boy came up to me at my book signing and said, "Did you write How to Survive Middle School?"

"Yes."

"I loved that book!"

You've probably seen this video. It's gone viral.

But if you haven't, it's honest . . . and sad.

There is an addendum this boy wrote on YouTube. It's several months after he created this video, and he's happy and doing well now.

I love his honesty. It made me want to reach through the screen and give him a hug.

As a children's book author, it reminded me why I write: So kids like him can feel less alone.

This video is a great reminder how important it is to be kind to one another.

Where's the Lorax When You Need Him?

When we walked our dogs, they always stopped under the Royal Poinciana tree on our corner. We admired the orange blooms and long green pods. It was the only shade for blocks.

When Hubby saw a "For Sale" sign in front of the property, he said, "Uh oh. That tree's going to come down."

"Don't say that," I said. "It might not."

A few weeks later, there were two men out there. One had a chain saw; the other stood back with arms crossed.

"You're not going to cut down that tree," I said to the man with his arms crossed.

"I've got to," he said, gesturing. "Look how it's hitting that wire up there."

"But we love that tree. It barely survived the hurricanes, then came back to what it is now."

He shrugged.

I fumed.

It reminded me of this book, where residents saw an orange traffic cone one day near their beloved orange tree and knew trouble was brewing.

And this book about how Julia Butterfly Hill spent TWO YEARS living in a tree to save it from being cut down.

It wasn't long before the beautiful tree on our corner looked like this . . .

And then this . . .

The book we really need is this one . . .

Where's the Lorax when you need him?

Learning a Thing or Two About Our Education System . . .

Our children taught me what was wrong with the education system.

Through grade five, they were sponges, curious and excited to learn about everything that came their way. After school, we hit the playground or flopped our legs over the couch and read library books and comic books or . . . cooked or built or whatever struck our fancies.

As the years went by, our boys became less engaged in the traditional teaching model. By this point, they knew what they loved to do -- theater, sports, cooking, music, etc. -- and were getting precious little of it during school hours. Homework was done shoddily or ignored. They just couldn't see the point.

And I couldn't promise them that if they did well in school and got into a good college, they'd get a great job and be set for life. They could see that wasn't necessarily true anymore. They sensed they needed something more -- a different approach to education to prepare for our changing world.

Everything in it was changing, and so fast. Except our model for public education.

Then I discovered a video by Sir Ken Robinson, PhD -- an internationally recognized leader in the development of education, creativity and innovation.

While watching, I wanted to shout, "Yes! That's exactly how I feel. Indeed, standardized testing for dollars is one of the worst things to happen to education! Of course, collaboration produces amazing results."

And if you appreciate what Sir Ken Robinson has to say as much as I do, check out his Ted talk here (about 20 minutes) . . .

My favorite of his points is that we need to help children discover what they love, what they're passionate about and let them grow from there. It was true for me, as I knew I wanted to be a writer by the time I was ten. Everything else fed into that. Finding one's passion and a love for literacy are the two things I try to impart to children during every school visit.

8 Best Things About Miami Book Fair International

1. That I finally got there after living in South Florida for 15 years and wanting to go. (It's only 1-1/2 hours away.)

2. Got to spend the entire day with Hubby because, by some miracle, neither of us were traveling for work, attending a meeting or driving our kids somewhere.

3. The weather. Gorgeous Saturday, even though it poured buckets the previous day.

4. Arrived just in time to see our good friends, Riley and Kenny, of Page Turner Adventures, perform "The Great Pizza Contest," based on Riley's book. After they finished performing and emceeing the children's stage for the day, we joined them for a delicious Cuban dinner on Biscayne Bay.

5. Finally heard the guys who make being a book nerd cool -- The Rock Bottom Remainders. Dave Barry rocked out, his brother Sam Barry played a mean harmonica, Ridley Pearson sang with soul and the whole band got a huge audience dancing to "Mustang Sally."

6. We even got to hear a Chinese orchestra play Jingle Bells.

7. Dave Barry introduced the one author/comedian we saw -- Andy Borowitz. Hubby loves his Borowitz Report and his very funny tweets, so we bought his new book and listened to his presentation. Funniest dude around! Laughed the entire time.

8. But for me, the best part of the Miami Book Fair was meeting this guy . . .

When our kids were little, they LOVED the Berenstain Bear books so much so that we all acted out the parts. Hubby got to be Papa Bear. I, of course, was Mama Bear. Oldest son played Brother Bear. And our younger son got stuck playing Sister Bear.

Did I ever tell you about Debbie Remington?

Here I am with Debbie at the St. Lucie County Family Reading Festival last year.

She's one of those people who will do anything (ahem, ANYTHING) to get kids reading. As the media specialist at Manatee Academy and President of the St. Lucie County Reading Council, she dreamed up a wild idea.

Last week, every single student at Manatee Academy read books. All day! Short books. Easy book. Any books. All day long. Reading. Reading. Reading. At the end of that day, the students had read more than 70,000 books.

Since they broke the record set last year, Debbie Remington kept her promise. She kissed an animal live on the school's TV station. This year, she kissed a python. "Not on the head," she said. And before that? A hedgehog! "That one hurt," she admitted.

When Debbie Remington asked me to visit her school, I said, "YES!" Anyone who would kiss a hedgehog to get kids reading was okay in my book. Debbie was also responsible for HOW TO SURVIVE MIDDLE SCHOOL being St. Lucie County's One County/One Book read for this year.

Boy, did they make me feel welcome . . .

And even more welcome . . .

I had the pleasure of speaking to the entire 7th grade (well, those who read the e-mail and got there on time). And then the entire 6th grade. The 5th graders, the last group, were crazy enthusiastic. Bunches of them came up to tell me what page or chapter they were on in my book.

Doing What You Were Meant to Do . . .

It was only 8:45 pm, but I was tired. Our high schooler, exhausted, was sleeping already.

In pajamas, I was watching the documentary The One Percent, about the growing wealth gap in America. I let our two dogs out in the fenced back yard for the last time of the evening.

I couldn't wait to get to bed.

About five minutes later, I called the dogs in. "Puppies!" Expecting to hear the jangle of their tags and the thump of the doggy door flying open, I heard nothing.

Nothing.

They had dug below the chicken wire and under our fence through a space that looked so small it could barely accommodate a gerbil.

Actually, it was this guy. He's our digger. Our chewer. Our sweet boy, Benji. Teddy follows along.

When the dogs got out in the past, they never strayed far. We'd usually find them meandering around the playground a block away.

This time they were not at the playground. I grabbed our college-aged son and drove there. I drove up and down the streets of our neighborhood. No doggies. Our son went home to stay by the phone. I kept driving. Our wonderful neighbors came out to help me look. (Hubby was out of town on business.)

No doggies.

Forty-five minutes had passed. It was dark. I worried about a car hitting one or both of them. They stayed together when they wandered.

That's when my cell phone rang. "Someone has them," my son said. "She's in front of the middle school."

In front of the middle school? That was over a mile and a half away.

I drove there to find Benji (aka Butthead) sitting in a woman's car. She gave him to me on a leash. "I work for an animal hospital," she said. "When I see a dog walking by himself, I always look for the owner. Your other dog wouldn't stay, though. He went up that street." She pointed up a dark street.

Teddy. He's our skittish one.

After thanking the woman and getting Benji in the car, I drove down that dark street. And another, calling, "Cookies!" out the window. That one word always got the dogs running to me to discover which small treat I had for them. No luck tonight.

But I did see another car criss-crossing the same area. It was that woman! She stopped beside my car. "Give me your cell number. If I find him, I know he won't come to me, but I'll call you."

How do you thank someone like that?

"I'd do this for anyone," she said.

We drove in opposite directions. My cell rang. "He's near my car. When you called 'Cookies,' he went charging down the street."

I drove back and saw Teddy on the sidewalk to the right of the woman's car. I jumped out, flung open the back door and called, "Teddy!" He ran fast toward me, stopped short, looked up at me, then hopped into the car.

Safe.

I thanked the woman, then texted her again when we got home. This is what she wrote back: "I'm just glad to know they're home safe."

And she was . . . because that is what she does. Cares deeply about animals.

I have this theory: When we do exactly what we were meant to do, what we are passionate about, what we care deeply about, we make a substantive difference.

This woman made a difference. I believe our dogs would not have been home safely by 10 pm if she hadn't done what she cared deeply about.

The leash around Benji's neck was from the animal hospital where she works. I'm going to call later today to let her employers know about how her dedication extends beyond the boundaries of her work environment.

Earlier that day, a local school librarian sent me an e-mail: "One of our 7th grade intensive reading students started How To Survive . . . and came back to tell me and her reading teacher that over the weekend her mother had to tell her to put the book down! That has never happened to her before! Her teacher got tears in her eyes! Your book may make her a lifelong reader!!"

When we do what we care deeply about, what we were meant to do, we make meaningful differences.

Thank you, Crystal! Because of you, our dogs are home safe.

'Cause You Can't Work All the Time . . .

While hiking through Munyon Island, we learned there was a 5-story, 21-room, 8-bath hotel built on the end of the island in 1903. It burnt to the ground in 1917.

Nicole and I decided it would make a great setting for a horror story, where ghosts from the hotel still inhabit the tiny island. And visitors, like us, are sometimes lured to the hotel . . . and never leave.

Hmm. I guess when you're a writer, even when you're not working . . . your imagination is always on call.

School Visit in PA, Surprise Snowfall and Something SCARY

You know your school visit is going to be fun when the principal introduces himself . . . and he's dressed as a scarecrow!

I had the pleasure of visiting with some of the students at Newtown Middle School in PA.

Big thanks to media specialist, Jana Bovino, for pulling this visit together on short notice.

Beth is the reason I was visiting Newtown Middle School. I've been friends with her mom, June, since high school. Beth has been a BIG supporter of my books. When she e-mailed to ask if I could visit her school, I replied, "I just booked a flight to the area. I'd love to visit your school!"

And it turned out to be a delightful visit!

After the school visit, it was off to Penn State -- Happy Valley to visit another high school friend, Monica, and her lovely family.

I woke Saturday to something I hadn't seen in THREE YEARS!

This Florida girl really enjoyed it. I drew pictures in the snow and threw snowballs and caught flakes on my tongue, but mostly I enjoyed it from inside . . . where the fireplace (and dog, Cocoa) was.

Then I found out something scary. There was a BEAR on the deck during the night. A BEAR! Fortunately, I slept right through it. So no photos of the bear or what it did to the bird feeder, while trying to get at the seeds inside.

As if that wasn't scary enough, I flew home on Halloween with my niece, Nicole.

An October to Dismember, er, Remember

Writing:

I've LOVED Scholastic's Storyworks Magazine since our boys were in elementary school and I'd steal, um, borrow their copies. Great stories, poetry, non-fiction, word games, etc.

When I discovered that the author of a delightful novel, Emma Jean Lazarus Fell Out of a Tree, was also the editor of Storyworks Magazine, I had to write to the amazing Lauren Tarshis.

Next thing I knew, Lauren had enjoyed my first book and I found myself writing a short story for Storyworks Magazine. It appeared in their October issue. I love the layout and artwork. And I'm so proud to have my work in this publication. Thank you, Lauren!

Later, I found out How to Survive Middle School was the 2nd bestseller in middle grade books for Scholastic Book Clubs. It ranked higher than James Patterson's middle school book. Check it out!

6-1/2 Ways to Carve a Fantastic Pumpkin with DAVID LAROCHELLE

To celebrate Halloween, we're revisiting David LaRochelle's popular pumpkin-carving post.

David has graciously added a couple new pumpkins for our viewing pleasure.

But first, a belated happy birthday: "Happy birthday, David!"

And happy birthday to David's wonderful new book, THE HAUNTED HAMBURGER AND OTHER GHOSTLY STORIES, illustrated by Paul Meisel.

Onto the new pumpkins . . .

TOMB it may concern: Halloween is my favorite holiday. And it's especially BOOtiful this year because the amazing pumpkin carver, David LaRochelle, is in the (haunted) house.

Before we get to David's astounding pumpkins, here are 6-1/2 things you should know about him.

1. His hilarious novel, ABSOLUTELY, POSITIVELY NOT, won the Sid Fleischman Humor Award.

2. This year, he is promoting TWO brand new picture books -- this one and this one.

3. Reese Witherspoon read his book, THE BEST PET OF ALL, at the WHITE HOUSE!

4. David and I have something in common. We both create puzzles and have been published in GAMES Magazine.

5. David has won some amazing prizes in a number of contests. (Watch the video link at the end to hear about a doozie!)

6. Once a teacher, David now does MANY school visits each year.

6-1/2. David is one of the nicest people I've ever met.

6-1/2 WAYS TO CARVE A FANTASTIC PUMPKIN WITH DAVID LAROCHELLE . . .

1. Choose the right pumpkin. Check it all over (including the bottom) for soft spots, especially if you buy your pumpkin a week or more ahead of Halloween. More than once I've lost a lovely pumpkin to rot because a teeny, tiny brown spot blossomed into a huge, mushy, rotten patch. And don't shy away from odd-shaped pumpkins or pumpkins with "warts"; these can be inspiration for a unique design.

2. Choose the right tools. Sure, you can carve your pumpkin with a kitchen knife, but for easier cutting and more intricate designs, buy yourself one of the inexpensive pumpkin carving kits you can get at the grocery store (I use PumpkinMasters, but there are other brands). For some of my designs I use a Speedball linoleum carving tool (you can get these at an art supply store) to scrape away just the outside layer of flesh rather than carving all the way through the pumpkin skin.

3. Clean your pumpkin well. Scrape the insides until the surface that you'll be carving is about an inch thick. You can test it with a pin. If it's thicker than that, it will be hard to carve a recognizable design; if it's much thinner, the design might collapse.

4. Be creative! As you plan your design, don't limit yourself to faces. I've carved pumpkins with dragons, snakes, words, a clock, the cover of one of my books, even a Halloween version of Grant Wood's painting "Amercian Gothic." Let your imagination go wild! And who says you have to limit yourself to Halloween ideas? Why not carve a flower, music notes, or even a happy hamster? And sometimes the simplest designs, such as a single question mark, can be the most striking.

5. Transfer your design to your pumpkin. I draw my designs on tracing paper, then tape the paper to my pumpkin and prick along the lines with a straight pin. When I remove the paper, the pin pricks show my design.

6. Lighting your creation. I usually use multiple (up to six or seven) tea candles inside each pumpkin. It makes them glow like beacons, and in case one candle goes out, the pumpkin will still look good. I've also lit pumpkins with Christmas lights. A single blinking colored light inside a pumpkin gives a very creepy effect.

And finally, 6 1/2. Don't worry about perfection. If your knife slips while carving, it will probably give your pumpkin more character. Some of the favorite pumpkins I've seen in the neighborhood are ones with lopsided mouths or mismatched eyes.

Best Google Chat Visit Ever!

One of the best parts about being an author is meeting enthusiastic young fans. And sometimes that happens virtually.

I had the great pleasure of visiting nearly 100 wonderful students from Lyndon Baines Johnson Middle School in Pharr, Texas.

After talking about some behind-the-scenes tidbits about me and my books, I enjoyed a steady stream of students stepping up to the camera with a bevy of the best questions I've ever gotten. Questions about characters, plot, motivation, specific details and so much more. That's because they all read the book.

Podcasts for Children's Book Nerds

Since I never seem to have enough time to read everything I want to, I started listening to books in my car. That led to downloading and listening to podcasts.

I discovered two great ones I'd love to share:

1. Wordplaypodcast by Nathan Bransford, James Dashner and Jeff Savage. This podcast comes out weekly. There is often a fun, fascinating guest, and once a month they create an episode for young writers.

2. Author/illustrator, Katie Davis, has been creating her Brain Burps Podcast for some time, so there are a lot of episodes to choose from. So far, I've listened to Bruce Coville share his experiences in Egypt during the mass protests, Rebecca Stead and Linda Sue Park talk about winning the Newbery and Nancy Werlin share how much she earns annually.

These podcasts help me learn more about my field while I'm in the car, working out at the gym or simply taking a walk.

Writing Workshop at the Blake Library in Stuart, FL

Thanks, Jennifer Salas, Youth Services Coordinator and uber-wonderful children's librarian!

By the time my writing workshop ended last night, Jennifer had been at work around the clock. And was still smiling!

A big thanks to the teens (and almost teens) who came out (ahem, may possibly have been forced by their parents) to my writing workshop, where we imagined ourselves winning a medal for something we accomplished 25 years in the future, did some fun brainstorming and learned a rather disconcerting fact about hamsters sometimes eating their babies. (Is this true? Ugh!)

Brilliant young writers hard at work. Jennifer Salas, back left. And through those windows were young children reading to therapy dogs. (One of the dogs barked at the exact moment we said the word "cat." Hmm.)

My bud, Holly, was awesome enough to spend her evening helping with the workshop. I paid her in food at a cool restaurant when it was over. Thanks, Holly!

My favorite part was not the hour of writing and sharing (although that's always awesome), it was the few minutes when it was all over. A handful of kids came up to me and shared what was important to them -- their love for writing or reading or something special they'd written. I stopped cleaning up and paid attention to each child, because those are the moments that stick.

For the first time at a writing workshop, I had more boys attending than girls. How cool is that?!

Almost as cool as the six children's authors who also teach writing and run this amazing site, loaded with great ideas, inspiration and exercises for teaching writing. Thank you, Teaching Authors!

6-1/2 Ways to Unravel That Story Problem by Becca Puglisi . . .

It's not Halloween, but I've got a treat for you!

The amazing Becca Puglisi (part of the dynamic duo that includes Angela Ackerman) creates a fantastic resource for writers -- The Bookshelf Muse. If you ever get stuck for new ways to show character traits, emotion, setting, etc., get thee to The Bookshelf Muse! Among other goodies, you'll find an extensive thesaurus (including weather, setting, symbolism, etc.) that is one of the best tools I've found to have beside me while writing.

Becca is also the master of mood in her writing. Her fiction grips you by the throat and doesn't let go. How do I know this? Well, dear reader, I'm fortunate to have Becca in the SCBWI critique group I run with Linda Marlow.

Today, Becca shares 6-1/2 savvy tips for unraveling a story problem.

Becca Puglisi is an SCBWI member and co-host of The Bookshelf Muse, an on-line resource for writers. She also has a number of magazine publications under her belt. Her biggest writing problem so far is landing an agent. If any agents are interested in helping out with that, she’s open to discussion.

6-1/2 WAYS TO UNRAVEL THAT STORY PROBLEM . . .

Whether we’re published or unpublished, newbie or veteran writers--all our stories have issues. Sometimes it’s hard to even know what the problem is, much less how to fix it. Here are some methods that have helped me get to the root of my story’s issue:

1. Skip it. Don’t obsess over that opening, scene, or sub plot. Just keep writing. Finish the draft, work on what you do know, and by that point, you’ll most likely have a better idea of what to do.

2. Read about the craft of writing. If you know what the problem is, consult some of the excellent non-fiction resources out there. Fine-tuning the voice, writing emotion effectively, tying together plots and sub-plots--every tricky trick of the trade has been covered at some point. So if you’re out of ideas, borrow a few from people who share them.

3. Phone a friend. I don’t know how many times I’ve written Angela (my critique partner, Bookshelf Muse co-host, and writing hero) an epistle-ish email asking her opinion about something I’m struggling with. She’s a gifted writer and her advice is spot-on, but a lot of the time, I end up sending her another message before she gets back to me--a much shorter message, something along the lines of “Nevermind”. There’s something about talking (or writing) a problem out that rearranges things in our brains and brings the solution into focus.

4. Write something else. Work on a new project for awhile, or better yet, write something completely different--poetry, writing exercises, a picture book, something outside of your preferred genre or audience. Like switching up your exercise routine when you hit a plateau, switching up your writing may give you new insight into that problem area.

5. Do something else completely. Take a walk, go to the gym, watch a movie, play Diablo III--oh wait, you can’t play Diablo III because the release date has been pushed back YET AGAIN. Ahem. The point is, sometimes a short break from writing is all that’s needed to gain some perspective in order to see things clearly.

6. Consult the experts. If you know your struggle is in a certain area, think of books you’ve read that handle the issue well. Re-read them with an analyzing eye. Make notes of phrasings that work, what techniques are used, etc. Even if it takes you awhile to figure out how to apply what you see, it’s encouraging to know that what you’re trying to do is do-able, that others have achieved the seemingly impossible.

6-1/2. Sleep on it. Seriously. I don’t know how many times I’ve gone to bed thinking about a problem in my book only to be surprised with the answer the next day while I’m showering, cooking dinner, or vacuuming Cheerios from under the dining room table. If your conscious brain can’t figure it out, let your subconscious have a go at it. That way, you’re free to do other things, anyway.

What Writers Do All Day . . .

We write, of course. All day. Every day.

Okay, is my agent done reading now?

When I need my 10,785,294th break during writing, I do any of the following: Make a cup of tea, check my book's ranking on Amazon, look out the window at palm trees and wonder why I'm stuck inside with a computer on my lap, Google my name, go into the kitchen to get an apple, but come back with a Pop-tart and slice of pumpkin cheesecake, check e-mail, pet the dog/cat/goldfish, look up funny baby videos on YouTube, check to see if Amazon ranking has improved since last time I checked, read about someone's breakfast choice on FB, ignore the dust bunnies multiplying under the bed, read blogs. (Really, it's a wonder I have ever completed a single book in my entire life!)

On Meg Cabot's super fun blog, she shared an old YouTube video of what a day in her writing life is like.

And just in case my agent is reading this far, I'm getting back to work write, er, right this minute. Really . . . just as soon as I check those Amazon rankings one more time.

Getting Unstuck and Inspired

The other morning, my brain was sludge. The words wouldn't come. I felt discouraged and frustrated.

I got myself out of the house and to the Cornell Museum of Art & American Culture with friends.

This is what we saw when we entered:

There are two fine art crayon artists in the world -- Don Marco and his son, Jeffrey Robert.

The first room was filled with Don Marco's art of the American West. His depiction of American Indians was amazing. I encourage you to check out his art here. It's astounding that anyone could produce this art using crayons.

This centerpiece of the second room was created by the people from the Cornell Museum:

Here, we watched a video about how crayons were made. This isn't the one we saw, but this video is from Sesame Street and is pretty cool.

Then we watched one about how Jeffrey Robert creates his crayon art, which is very different from his father's.

The art knocked me right out of my slump.

The next morning, ideas flowed and I wrote like my pen was on fire. That evening my S.C.B.W.I. critique group said, "Donna, it looks like you've got the beginning of your next book." Wahoo!

Fun at Independence Middle School and Barnes & Noble

Which response was given by 6th graders to the question: "What might be a good place for a writer to begin her journey?"

B) School
C) Anywhere
D) A toaster

The answer is E) All of the above. Middle school kids are so much fun! The smart-aleck boy who said, "Um, a toaster" will definitely land in a novel someday. My favorite answer, though, is C) Anywhere because thought and truth went into that answer.

Had a blast talking with 400 6th graders at Independence Middle School yesterday afternoon.

That was followed by a two-hour event at Barnes & Noble, where students played flute, wind instruments and sang. Lots of proud parents snapping photos.

I LOVED meeting young readers and chatting with them and their parents.

Dad has always been a huge supporter of my books. In fact, he's been the first reader of each of my three books the moment the ARC has become available. He loved Olivia Bean, Trivia Queen. But then again, he's a huge fan of Jeopardy!


Here's Dad with the ARC for How to Survive Middle School.

Dad's a glass half full kind of guy. In fact, he's a glass completely full and brimming over kind of guy. But the past few months have been rough. (The previous sentence is an understatement of epic proportions.)

June 15th, his partner of 17 years slipped quietly away from cancer, with Dad and her son beside her.

We loved having Dad with us for the summer. It wasn't easy for him, though, to be away from his life in NJ, his fun, feisty friends, my stepsister and her family and the place he called home for over 35 years.

But Dad enjoyed lots of Phillies games on TV with the boys, coffee with my hubby, time with Dorothy's son, Michael, and Dorothy's brother, Blair, and, well, a memorable run-in with an attack goose. (Didn't know Dad could run that fast!)

As if losing his wife and having to move from his home wasn't enough, Dad's "vacation" in Vegas with my sister and his best friend three weeks ago turned into an ambulance ride to the hospital where he needed to have triple bypass surgery.

Thanks so Southwest Airlines, I was able to get a flight to Vegas before Dad's surgery. And I was able to stay for a week so my sister and I could be mother hens by Dad's bedside.

Know what? Dad's doing great. The day of surgery he was up and walking. Less than two weeks later, he was on the exercise bike and walking steps in rehab. A huge thanks to my sister, Sherry, bro-in-law, Ben and nifty nephew, Ethan, for taking such good care of him. He's recovering in their happy home now.

20 YEARS

Twenty years of marriage is nothing to sneeze at, unless of course, you're allergic to marriage. I'm not a big fan of emphasizing a single day. I'm a fan of living well in the moment, being kind and yadda, yadda, yadda.

But today, Dan and I are married 20 years.

We are kind to each other and do small kindnesses for each other. We are that voice that says, "How was your day?" and usually listens to the answer. While we both have passions and friends beyond each other, we prefer to spend time together.

After twenty years, we still find each other interesting. We still have things to talk about (although I do most of the talking -- blah, blah, blah). And we've been through rough things -- health things, kid things, death things -- and those things, we decided, are the glue that binds us.

So a big thank you to Addam Schwartz because 23-1/2 years ago he asked, "Donna, mind if a friend of mine joins us for the movie tonight?"

I didn't say yes right away. I asked, "Is he cute?" which made Addam all uncomfortable. How is a guy supposed to answer that?

But that friend turned out to be Dan. And Dan felt comfortable enough with me on that first meeting to throw popcorn at me during the movies. (We were young.) About a month later, Dan asked me out. (He worked three jobs and went to college full-time.)

I didn't say yes right away. I told my mom, "Hey, looks like I'm getting a free dinner from this guy."

Dan and I were so broke, even though we both worked. A lot. Dan took me out to bowl and had no money. He took me out to dinner and had no money. (Borrowed it from his dad.)

Alongside a dock on Philadelphia's waterfront, late at night (with only one homeless person nearby) after a lovely dinner (during which I decided to become a vegetarian and write seriously long run-on sentences), Dan asked me to marry him.

I didn't say yes right away. I thought about it. Then I said yes.

It's worked out okay . . .

Happy 20th anniversary! Love you, Baby!!!

RESOURCES FOR YOUNG WRITERS . . .

When I was a young writer (about 10-1/2 billion years ago), I spent lots of time in the 808 section of the Philadelphia Public Library. I read books like Writer's Market to figure out how to sell my writing and get rich.

When I was 14, I sent a batch of greeting card ideas to Hallmark.

Guess what Hallmark sent back.

A rejection letter, of course. But I didn't let it discourage me.

I continued writing and sending my work out for decades. While I kept getting rejected (Boo hoo!), I also sold greeting cards, stories, funny essays and, eventually, books for kids. Wahoo!

Never did get rich, but I sure had fun!

I know that when I was a kid, I would have LOVED a list of all the great books and Web sites available for young writers today.

Because I like you so much (I really do!), I'm going to share these wonderful resources with you.

These clothing items are not for children. I repeat: They items are not for children. (Oh, poor poochies!)

Obviously, the intended recipients of these items are not impressed. Are you boys?

Most parenting daze, er, days, we suit up, show up and nothing much happens. Some parenting days are filled with awful. But every once in a while, we get a parenting moment that fills us with joy.

Last night was one of those moments.

Not only did Dan and I have the joy of watching our oldest son walk across the stage and receive his high school diploma, we did it while sitting next to friends who have been with us through all of it since pre-school and kindergarten.

But alas, not everyone was suitably impressed . . .

Only regret? Wish Poppy Jake were sitting with us to enjoy the moment. He would have been so proud of his guy.

Cindy is a book club expert and she's agreed to share her 6-1/2 list about mother/daughter book clubs and give away a copy of her book, BOOK BY BOOK: THE COMPLETE GUIDE TO CREATING MOTHER/DAUGHTER BOOK CLUBS to one lucky blog reader. (Scroll down to enter.)

Cindy's advice works for all sorts of book clubs, I think. Father/son, Mother/son, Cranky old ladies who like to get together and have reasonably intelligent conversation while sipping (or gulping) wine. Whatever kind of book club floats your boat, Cindy is way cool and knows book clubs!

Cindy is the founder of two long-running mother-daughter book clubs and lives in Portland, Oregon with her husband and two daughters. She's created some amazing Meeting Planner Guides on her site. These guides are chock-full of activities, info about the author, discussion questions, recipes, etc. There is a FREE sample guide for a book you may have heard of. 6-1/2 REASONS TO LOVE MOTHER/DAUGHTER (OR ANY) BOOK CLUBS:

(Note: Comments in parenthesis are mine, mine, all mine!)

1. Books. Different styles, different genres, different authors than the ones you usually pick up to read. Your book club friends will introduce you to all kinds of new titles. My favorite that I never would have read on my own was House of the Scorpion by Nancy Farmer. (And I LOVED The Eye, the Ear and The Arm by Nancy Farmer.)

2. Food. Book-themed snacks, tasty dinners, yummy desserts. There’s usually lots of good food at book club meetings. And most of the time I’m not the one cooking it since I only host once in a club-wide rotation. (And some thoughtful authors even include recipes at the back of their novels. I'm just sayin'.)

3. Friends. Social time is so much fun you have to force yourselves to cut it off and move on to talking about the book. That’s fun too, and you learn things about your friends that you may have never otherwise discovered. (I learned that my friends like to drink wine. Lots of wine. The only time I belonged to a book club, we read the book for the first meeting and after that it was all chatting and drinking, while the book lay on a table nearby. This would NOT happen at a mother/daughter book club meeting, of course. This would only happen at an old cranky lady book club meeting. :)

4. Moms and daughters listening to each other. This is not just a spectator sport; both generations get involved. And the observations of both are equally valid and important to hear. (Any time communication happens between the generations is a good thing. I know. I have teenagers.)

5. Field trips. You can read a book then go to the movie when it comes out and compare the two. You can all go shopping at a bookstore to find your next selection. A book you read might even inspire you to volunteer for a cause. (*Raises hand.* I want to volunteer for a cause. Baking chocolate chip cookies for cranky old ladies at a book club meeting is a cause. Right?)

6. Meeting authors. How cool is it that book clubs can connect with the authors of some of the books they read? We met Zlata Filipovic of Zlata’s Diary: A Child's Life in Wartime Sarajevo and were awed to see this confident young woman talk about her experiences as a child in war-torn Sarajevo. (Zlata has been called the Anne Frank of Sarajevo. I'm reading her touching book right now. Well not right now. I'm creating this blog post right now. Ah, you know what I mean!)

6-1/2. Weekends away. Dance, play cards, get a massage, walk on the beach, bake cookies, laugh a lot, and yes, talk about a book. (Did someone mention cookies?!)

Celebrating Young Authors

My last event of the school year was speaking at a wonderful luncheon at Manatee Academy to celebrate young authors from schools in St. Lucie County, FL.

The amazing Debbie Remington, Media Specialist at Manatee Academy and president of the St. Lucie County Reading Council, invited me to speak at this special event.

These award-winning young authors didn't write a poem or a story. They created BOOKS with chapters and artwork and dazzling covers.

About 200 people attended the event.

Attendees were treated to lunch, a book fair and a short talk by someone who once sat where those young authors sat (hint: me). Then winners were presented with certificates, free books and prizes.

It was inspiring to see adults celebrating these young authors. But my favorite part occurred before hubby and I even walked in. As we headed to the event, a young author and her mother walked behind us. We overheard the mother say, "I love you and I'm so proud of you."

That is what the event was all about. Hubby and I left with a warm feeling. It was great meeting these young authors and celebrating their hard work. Kudos to Debbie Remington, the St. Lucie County Reading Council and all the dedicated people who created such a special event to celebrate these remarkable young authors!

The Best Job in the World . . .

Just had a delightful Skype visit with a school book club. I've never seen students so excited in my life! And they had such great questions for me.

Mrs. Pelias deserves a big THANK YOU for coordinating the visit. And for helping get these kids so excited about reading.

NESCBWI 2011 Conference and, um, Lobster Poop

What a wonderful, whirlwind weekend!

I just returned from the 25th anniversary celebration of the New England SCBWI Conference. About 590 people attended.

Here are the backs of some of their heads . . .

Oh, nevermind. That's Lin Oliver giving her fabulous keynote. Full of heart and hope. And the words that echoed? DO THE WORK. (Hmm. What a concept.)

After that, several workshops were presented. I gave my "Quirky Character" talk to a wonderfully enthusiastic group.

On the other side of me was the lovely Erin Dionne . . .

Erin's book, The Total Tragedy of a Girl Named Hamlet, is on the Texas Lone Star Reading List along with my book, How to Survive Middle School. Hamlet is seriously funny. Don't you just love the cover?

After the signing, at the faculty dinner, I noticed a woman sitting by herself at a big table. It was the woman from my workshop who offered encouraging smiles. I sat beside her and said, "Thank you so much for your wonderful smile. It really helped during my talk." We chatted while the rest of the table filled. Finally, I asked, "So, what books have you written?" Very demurely, she said, "Oh, Annie on my Mind."

ANNIE ON MY MIND?!

I was sitting next to Nancy Garden. The Nancy Garden.

Here's one of her books that started a firestorm of controversy, but probably saved a lot of lives and let a lot of people know they were fine just the way they were.

She just finished a new novella that will be part of a collection of four novellas that will benefit the Trevor Project. Keep your eyeballs out for it.

What a lovely, gracious woman! Turns out she was in the film we were watching later that evening -- LIBRARY OF THE EARLY MIND -- wit and wisdom from many luminaries in the field of children's literature.

Sunday began with breakfast with my roommate, Anita Nolan.

Then a great keynote by Steve Mooser. He shared his thoughts about all the things that could happen in the field of children's literature with new media and technology.

Then I had the pleasure of giving a two-hour workshop about writing humor. I couldn't have asked for a more engaged, creative, funny audience.

Here are some of them now . . .

If you look carefully, you'll see Steve Mooser and Lin Oliver (It's like Where's Waldo, only with Lin and Steve), the two astounding people who created SCBW (the "I" came later thanks to Tomie dePaola) forty years ago. I count myself among the thousands and thousands who are grateful to them for planting the seeds that blossomed into a generous, talented, nurturing community of children's book writers, illustrators, editors, etc. that have changed and enriched my life in so many ways.

*Sniff.*

After my workshop, I dashed out the hotel doors to begin my ten-hour trek home.

Meet Clarisse

This is Clarisse . . .

For years, I've wanted a place to sit by a window to write/read/edit. When I pulled into our driveway, I saw two men carrying Clarisse (that's the name on the label) into our home.

Hubby saw me and said, "Happy Mother's Day."

Clarisse and I will spend many happy hours/days/time together. And because much of that time will be spent reading, I thought I'd share some of the best children's books I've read so far this year (and one book for adults that's narrated by a child).

While these books are wildly different, the thing each book has in common is that the author managed to get deeply into the mind and heart of the main character.

Turtle in Paradise -- Set in the Keys in the 1930's. Spunky main character and hilarious secondary characters. A gem!

Summerhouse Time -- A sweet story that's a quiet celebration of the power of family and love.

Something Like Hope -- Oh my Lord! This author gets inside the head of a girl who is inside a juvenile detention center, trying to come to terms with her horrific past and find a way to create hope for her future. Hard-hitting, yet doesn't hit you over the head. Sparse prose that hits all the right notes.

Mockingbird -- Sad, but hopeful as a girl, who views the world through the lens of Asperger's syndrome, deals with the tragic shooting of her beloved brother. Bit by bit, both daughter and father find a way to find their way.

How Lamar's Bad Prank Won a Bubba-Sized Trophy -- Holy crackers and cream cheese, author Crystal Allen is a new voice to pay attention to. Fell in love with Lamar from the first page. Unable to play a sport like basketball, which his superstar brother plays, Lamar must find something that works for a kid with severe asthma -- bowling. This fresh, funny and heartfelt novel deserves to win its own trophy!

If I Stay -- This young adult novel is surprising and beautiful as it tackles big questions about death and dying. The main character, unlike many fictional teens, actually likes her family. She struggles to decide what to do when they are all in a devastating car accident and she has to make an unfathomable choice. Lyrical language, musical themes, original characters. A subtle standout.

Everything is Fine -- I never knew what was coming with this book, written in unrhymed verse, but I couldn't wait to find out. Secrets. Sadness. Redemption. Tough topic, but everything about the writing was fine.

A Long Walk to Water -- Linda Sue Park is amazing. She tells two stories in this short novel -- one set in 1985 about Salva Dut, who traveled hundreds of miles to find safety from political violence in Sudan and one set in 2008, where Nya walks eight hours a day to get water for her family. The two stories intersect in a hope-filled conclusion.

Room -- Narrated perfectly by a five-year-old boy, Room tells the story of a woman who is forced to live in a small room by her captor. After having a child with the man, the young mother fashions as normal an existence as she can for her son. In Room, the boy finds stability and love; outside the walls of Room, he discovers confusion and pain. This gripping story keeps you turning pages until the true, satisfying conclusion. (This book is up there with The Help, Like Water for Elephants and Kelly Corrigan's The Middle Place.)

Sending Your Child, er, Book Into the World

When someone asks which of my books is my favorite, I say, "That's a little like asking me to choose which of my children I like best."

My books are a bit like my children. I put time, energy and heart into them and send them into the world, hoping mightily, but having no idea what will happen next.

In fact, How to Survive Middle School, was inspired by the tough times our children had during those turbulent adolescent years. (And memories of my, ahem, challenging adolescence.)

This book seems to have struck a chord with readers.

I just found out How to Survive Middle School will be St. Lucie County's "One Book/One Community" for the 2011/2012 school year. I'll be speaking at a number of events and schools throughout the year. My favorite part is that my publisher, Random House, has generously agreed to donate books to a shelter for abused women and children and to donate books to lower income families in a "Read it Forward" program, where participants read the book then share it with another family.

A world of appreciation to the St. Lucie County Reading Council, for inviting me to participate. And for their dedicated, passionate work to connect children and literature in fun, meaningful ways.

I'm thrilled that How to Survive Middle School has been nominated for the New York State Reading Association 2012 Charlotte Award. The committee chose ten books in four categories from hundreds and hundreds of books. It's an honor to be on this list!

And my book will be featured at Scholastic Book Fairs this fall. My friends from Page Turner Adventures are making a hilarious video (about a rapping hamster) that will be shown to middle school students before they browse the book fair. And this fun sneak preview, which includes my book, has been sent to educators and media specialists across the country.

My books aren't the only things I'm sending out into the world.

Yesterday, hubby and I toured the college campus where our oldest son will attend school next year. It was so exciting to hear about the opportunities he'll be given. We are really proud of him for getting to this point.

And we're really happy that How to Survive Middle School is doing so well because -- HOLY HIGHER EDUCATION! -- college sure ain't cheap.

APRIL IS FOR AUTHORS

Helen Zientek and Sue Sloan are the masterminds behind the awesome event APRIL IS FOR AUTHORS.

These two hard-working women and a host of volunteers brought over twenty authors and illustrators together for a fantastic event for the community.

There were panel discussions, author talks, technology talks, book signings, fun activities for the kids and shows by Page Turner Adventures.

I was fortunate to hear Edward Bloor's talk. I loved his novel, Tangerine.

Chris Crutcher was there and Alex Flinn and Doug Wilhelm and so many others.

I enjoyed meeting media specialists, librarians, teachers, administrators and kids.

Such enthusiastic kids!

This is Abigail with Hammy. She told me she LOVES reading.

Haley told me she loves books. Actual books. Not e-book readers.

Abigail and Haley and the other kids and their families who came up to my table reminded me exactly why I do what I do.

The Good, the Bad and the HUGE FREE AUTHOR EVENT . . .

The best part of my day yesterday was a Skype visit with Mr. Frantz's 6th grade class in Pennsylvania. What an enthusiastic, book-loving teacher. And those kids -- amazing!

Here they are, making their best silly faces.

The worst part of my day occurred while I was trying to write at a local library, surrounded by fabulous children's books.

While wrangling with stubborn characters, youngest son called from home, informing me that one of the following culprits peed on the couch. Again!

I know, they are entirely too cute to get angry with.

Once I cleaned up the mess and the other assorted messes that cropped up, I was finally ready to sit with my laptop, my imagination and a hot cup of tea on the back patio.

Uh-oh!

Sheesh! Some daze, er, days are like that, aren't they?

Today was better.

It began at our local middle school. I had the great pleasure of listening to fantastic YA author, Chris Crutcher, speak to a few hundred eighth graders. That man can tell a story!

Being an Author . . .

This author found a highly creative way to connect with readers. He opened a bookstore in NY with only ONE book in stock -- his!

Why didn't I think of that? Doh!

One of my favorite ways to connect is through meeting young readers in schools or during Skype visits.

Hammy and I did a whole bunch of Skype visits recently to celebrate World Read Aloud Day.

So, you can imagine how excited Hammy and I were to open our mailbox and find this . . .

It's full of creative cards, letters, drawings, etc. from young readers that Hammy and I had the pleasure to visit with during a FUNtastic Skype visit to Brook Forest Elementary.

Here are a few of the wonderful "Thank You"s the students created . . .

"Dear Donna Gephart, Thank you for skypeing with my class. You are great author. It was funny when you showed us your rubber chicken, and when you showed us your big glasses. You were very funny. About Writing Haiku

1. There is no yesterday; there is no tomorrow.

There is only you, scratching under my chin,

now.

The best haiku poems emerge from a right-this-minute experience. Use present tense to heighten immediacy – especially if writing from memory. Avoid creating haiku out of your imagination; they will lack authenticity.

2. When poised at a hole, remain still – and use your ears, eyes, nose, whiskers and mouth to detect a lurking gopher.

Observation is crucial to good haiku. Quiet your mind and use all five (or more!) senses to absorb the moment.

3. Be patient – then pounce!

Your haiku should capture a moment in time, revealing a surprise or evoking an ‘a-ha!’ or ‘ahh’. This pounce helps the reader awaken; to experience the ordinary in an extraordinary way.

4. Most felines have18 toes – unless we’re polydactyl; then we might have 20…or 22…or even 28!

Traditional Japanese haiku features a total of seventeen beats: five in the first line, seven in the second, five again in the third. The 5-7-5 rule does not apply to American haiku because 17 English phonetic syllables conveys way more information than needed – and can sound awkward or forced. So don’t worry if your haiku turns out 2-3-2 or 5-6-4. What’s more important is the essence of your chosen moment.

5. When I’m out, I want in; when I’m in, I want out. Mostly, I want out. That’s where the rats, gophers, lizards, snakes, bugs and birds are.

Traditional haiku features themes of nature. Try to use a kigo (season) word to hint at the weather or time of year.

6. What part of ‘meow’ don’t you understand?

If you tease a cat, it won’t bother to meow – it will bite or scratch. It shows its annoyance

rather than tells. Your haiku should not

explain; instead, it will illustrate a meaning

or feeling through a vivid image.

6 1/2. When in doubt, nap. Take time to revise and hone your haiku. If you grow weary, well, there’s always that comfy looking couch…

St. Lucie County's Family Raining, er, Reading Festival

As Hubby and I drove to St. Lucie County Saturday morning, I knew the second annual St. Lucie County Family Reading Festival would be as much fun as the first.

What I hadn't counted on was the rain. The minute Hubby and I arrived with our boxes of books, the skies over the Digital Domain Baseball Stadium opened up.

Everyone ran for cover. "Save the books!" was the battlecry.

We huddled in a dry area while the field was covered by tarps.

Young "Book-aneers" were not deterred from reading . . .

As is typical of South Florida weather, the shower passed and the sun shone brightly for the rest of the festival.

I was one of several authors who spoke and signed books. There was a "Read to the Principal" area. (Participants got a free book.) The mascot met young readers. Families browsed bins of free books from a book exchange. There were games and entertainment. But mostly, there was reading . . .

It's always a delight to see the community come out in force -- teachers, librarians, media specialists and families -- to celebrate reading.

SCBWI-EPA Pocono Mountain Retreat

Here's the Shawnee Inn, scene of the recent SCBWI-EPA Pocono Mountain Retreat . . .

What an interesting place. Right on the bank of the Delaware River . . .

I sat on one of these rocking chairs to enjoy the view . . .

And this little guy, "Sonny," kept me company in my room . . .

Every evening I returned to my room to find a poem and a freshly baked oatmeal raisin cookie waiting for me. And in the morning, I was awakened by a man playing bagpipes -- Yes, bagpipes! -- outside my window.

But the Inn wasn't the best part.

The people were!

Here are some of the fine, funny folks who endured, um, were enlightened by my humor writing workshop . . .

I enjoyed listening to amazing keynote speeches, but when it came time to give my keynote, "Six Reasons to Quit Writing (And One Important Reason Not To)," I was so nervous I slept only three measly hours the night before.

I survived. In fact, the speech went really well. As did the entire conference from start to finish.

So many wonderful people. A silent auction and raffle to benefit the SCBWI chapter in Japan. Inspiring speakers and attendees.

I definitely felt like I gained more than I gave.

Happy Birthday, Book!

Birthdays are fun.

Especially book birthdays. Especially this book's birthday because How to Survive Middle School has had a year I couldn't have imagined.

Let's begin at the beginning.

After As If Being 12-3/4 Isn't Bad Enough, My Mother Is Running for President came out, I wrote another book. It took a year of research and writing, involved multiple viewpoints and was 400 pages looooooooong.

My agent, Tina Wexler, was savvy enough to tell me those 400 pages were terrible. Actually, she was kind enough to say, "I think you should put this one away and write another book."

She was right, of course.

But there was no way I could write another book just then. My heart was in a chokehold. Our youngest son had just started middle school. One of 1,200 kids, he suffered mightily. He hated himself and got into all manner of trouble. I remembered that our older son had similar heart-breaking episodes at that age. In fact, I remembered when I suffered the humiliations of acne, unrequited love and discomfort in one's own skin during those awkward years.

I could write about those feelings, I thought. Maybe a character could write a book about how to survive middle school. Or better yet, create funny videos that end up on YouTube.

I infused those intense feelings into a book I titled: How to Survive Middle School Without Getting Your Head Flushed, Deal with an Ex-best Friend, um, Girls and a Heart-breaking Hamster. Thank goodness my publisher shortened the title!

My editor told me this territory has been covered before, so I'd better work hard to make my book different. I worked hard. She sent me several rounds of revisions until I got it right.

Still, when starred reviews came in, I was stunned. I'd never gotten a starred review.

Similarly, when I got the e-mail telling me that my book landed on the Texas Lone Star Reading List, I was shocked. I'd never appeared on a state reading list. Last week, I found out How to Survive Middle School will be on the New York state reading list, too. Then came inclusion on the Bank Street Children's Books best books of the year list.

Yowza! Checking my e-mail had become thrilling.

I'd been invited to speak at schools and literary events all over the country, like the BK Book Festival, coordinated by the awesome Arthur Levine. (Check out his new picture book, Monday is One Day.)

I learned that Scholastic bought the right to include my book in its fall book fairs and book club. And How to Survive Middle School will be featured in their author video that students across the country view before attending their school's book fair.

I received e-mails from children and adults that have made my day, week, month! Lily sent me a photo of the Jewish apple cake she and her mother made from the recipe in the back of my book.

When one sends a book into the world, one never knows what will happen. Usually what happens is a big pile of nothing.

So I'm delighted about all the wonderful that's happened in the first year of How to Survive Middle School. I'm glad most of all that it's made a difference to some young readers, that they learned they weren't alone in their feelings and struggles to survive those turbulent middle school years. I'm happy some young people learned that things get better.

Things certainly got better for our son. And the cool thing about all this is that some of the money I earn from this book will go to paying tuition for him to attend a phenomenal private high school in our area next year.

And I'm thrilled to announce that on my book's birthday -- April 13th -- How to Survive Middle School will go into its 6th printing.

So, happy birthday book. Thank you for bringing so much joy into my life. And don't forget that next year you'll have a sibling -- Olivia Bean, Trivia Queen will come into the world early in 2012. I hope she receives a reception half as lovely as you've had.

I'd have posted this on my book's actual birthday, but next week I'll be in PA, speaking at this conference then visiting family and friends.

Okay, I'm dubbing it Agent Appreciation Day although the "real" day created by author, Kody Keplinger, happened December 11th.

You can read lots of really nice posts about lots of literary agents here.

Since I missed the big day, my Agent Appreciation Day is, um, right now.

Tina Dubois Wexler, this one's for you . . .

In 2005, I wanted so badly to be on the other side of the divide between unpublished and published children's book authors. It's a dream that began when I was ten and wrote my first short story. There was nothing I wanted more.

By 2005, I'd published hundreds of greeting cards, funny essays for adults in major magazines and a story and poem in Highlights for Children, but selling just one children's book proved to be elusive. I have piles of rejection slips and six unpublishable children's novels in a drawer to prove it.

Then agent extraordinaire with I.C.M. (International Creative Management), Tina Wexler, came into my life.

Tina put out a call for writers on the SCBWI message boards in 2005. (If you don't belong to SCBWI and want a career writing or illustrating for children, stop reading this post and join immediately.)

The night I read Tina's call for new writers, I sent a book I'd written called How to Be a Naughty Kid and mentioned a "book" I was working on about a shy, gawky spelling bee champ whose mother was running for president in my query letter.

While Tina didn't think she could sell the Naughty Kid book, she liked my writing and loved the idea about the girl whose mother was running for president. In a letter, she told me to send her that book.

* Choke. Cough. Gasp. *

Oh honey, there was no book. There was a short story and the thought that it would make a good book. Someday.

I don't know where I got the courage, but I picked up the phone and called Tina, then Tina Dubois, and told her I didn't have a book, only a short story. I thought she might call me a big liar and hang up, but she responded differently. Tina said, "Take your time. Write the book and send it to me. My interest in this won't go away."

My interest in this won't go away.

So I wrote the book. I sent it to her.

She sent back MAJOR revision suggestions.

I quit. (Applied for a job as a children's librarian and didn't get it.)

Then I unquit, threw out all but the first two chapters and spent four months immersed in research and revisions.

I sent Tina those pages.

She loved it and sent it to seven publishing houses!

Three weeks later (Yes, three weeks.), Stephanie Elliott (then Stephanie Lane) at Delacorte Press/Random House acquired that novel.

The book came out in 2008 and went on to win the Sid Fleischman Humor Award. The weekend I flew to L.A. to accept that award at the SCBWI Conference was the best of my life because I was surrounded by my husband, Dan, dear friend, Jill, and agent/friend, Tina.

So, I did. I wrote a 400-page book with four different perspectives and sent it to Tina.

In a very nice way, she told me to put that book away and start something else.

I'd spent a year writing and researching that book. And I would have been devastated by Tina's assessment had she not been 100% right. Cliched characters, dull story, etc.

The next book I wrote was How to Survive Middle School. And I would not have written it if Tina hadn't very gently told me to put the other book away and start something else.

That's what Tina does, what every good agent does -- looks out for your whole career, not just one book. A good agent doesn't tell you everything you write is wonderful. She keeps you from putting junk into the world. And for that, I'm eternally grateful.

Being between books is an uncomfortable place for me. I've learned that it takes time for me to let go of one book and fill the well before I can write the next book, but I don't like it. I get antsy and frustrated. I write junk. And I write more junk. I decide I need to do something constructive with my time and check out the want ads.

During this crazy-making time for me, Tina reminds me that I don't need to become-a-librarian, write-a-chapter-book-series, cure-cancer . . . She gently guides me down from the ledge and whispers, "All you have to do is write the next book."

All you have to do is write the next book.

Notice, she doesn't say, "You have to write the next high-concept, best-selling, vampire/ghost/wizard/zombie book." She simply says, "All you have to do is write the next book." And because she's funny, she usually follows that up with, "Easy for me to say."

With Tina's wise words in my head, I wrote Olivia Bean, Trivia Queen, which was enthusiastically accepted by Stephanie Elliott at Delacorte -- our third book together. It was a bonus to learn that Stephanie, like my main character, is a big fan of Jeopardy!.

Tina had done a great job pairing me with Stephanie. I adored Stephanie's subtle wit and wicked way with a blue pencil on my manuscripts. (That's another thing a good agent does -- tries to match the right book/author with the right editor/house.)

So I was knocked right off my axis when Stephanie called to tell me she was leaving Random House for another job.

"But, but . . ."

It didn't help that I'm in that wonky place of letting go of one novel and gathering, gathering, gathering for the next one.

And while amazing things are happening for How to Survive Middle School -- landing on both the Texas and New York state reading lists and being picked up by Scholastic for book fairs and clubs -- that felt like pressure that my next book had to be out-of-this-galaxy spectacular, which of course made it impossible to write the only way that works -- allowing oneself to write a lousy first draft.

And there was Tina, with her calm, wise words. "All you have to do is write the next book."

My sister once asked me why I would give someone 15% of my earnings. I told my sister that without my agent, I'd get 100% of nothing. I would not have the career I have without Tina's guidance and wisdom. Tina earns her 15% by giving me and my career 115% of her time and energy.

Even though Tina has many wonderful clients, she always makes me feel like I'm her only one. She answers my questions promptly and is excellent about communicating during every step of the process.

I know not everyone is fortunate enough to have an agent who is also a friend, but I do. And today, I want to thank my friend, my agent for all the wonderful things she has helped bring into my life.

Thank you, Tina, for being my career partner, the person who ALWAYS has my back, my business guru, my champion and advocate for each stage of each book, my pre-editor and most importantly, my dear friend.

Tina, words can't convey my appreciation for all you've done for me (and my family) over the years, but maybe these seven simple ones will do: I'm off to write the next book . . .

Hammy Hits the Big Time . . .

Ever since Hammy found out he'd be featured in Scholastic's Book Fair Author Video, there's been no living with him.

He demands only organic veggies to stuff his cheeks with. He expects us to line his hamster wheel with shimmery, gold fabric and bring him fresh water every hour in a silver pitcher. And he squeals whenever I'm on the phone. He's afraid he'll miss a call from MTV, Oprah or Hamster Time, where he thinks he'll be named Hamster of the Year.

Sheesh! Who knew such a little hamster could get such a big head?

All this hamster hooplah just because Hammy's video will be part of the Scholastic video shown to middle school students before they head to their school book fairs this coming fall.

I mean, big deal. It's not as though he's as famous as this hamster . . .

And in the Beginning . . .

Beginnings are hard for me.

I fidget. I make a cup of tea . . . or twelve. I absolutely must take the dog for a walk. In fact, cleaning the toilets can often seem more appealing than staying put and putting pen to paper.

I don't know why. Once I'm in the story world, you can't keep me away. Cleaning, paying bills and speaking to my children often gets neglected.

But, oh, those pesky beginnings.

After a few false starts, I think I finally hooked onto the beginning of my new novel. I'm excited. I'm energized. I'm hopeful that I can sustain those feelings and create a whole new book.

Did you know it's World Read Aloud Day?

If you follow Kate Messner's blog, you did.

Thanks to Kate Messner and the miracle of Skype, I was able to meet with students from SIX different schools in FIVE different states (New York, Illinois twice, Ohio, North Carolina and Iowa).

We shared a lot of laughs. I showed the students some books I loved when I was their age, shared some behind-the-scenes stuff about my books and, of course, showed Hammy the Hamster and my rubber chicken necklace. Then I, um, READ because if you're not paying attention, it's World Read Aloud Day.

Here are the awesome kids from Oak Brook, IL . . .

And the students from Ohio made signs with pictures of my books on them, and at the end, several students held up letters that spelled out, "T-h-a-n-k Y-o-u!" Let me tell you, spelling-obsessed Vanessa Rothrock would have been proud. I know I was.

(Tip for authors: On the left side of my screen, I pulled up the section of my novel on Word so I could read without looking away at a book in my hands.)

It was super fun to read aloud and visit with so many students from so many states. The best part was that I didn't leave a single carbon footprint on the planet because I did it all from my home office.

Of course, I may have made bunny footprints because while it appeared that I was dressed in businesslike attire, down below, I was wearing these . . .

Persistence Pays Off -- EXCITING NEWS!

In 2007, I read Lisa Yee's posts about when she was chosen as the Thurber House Children's Writer in Residence.

Living in James Thurber's boyhood home for a month. Quiet time to write. Teaching writing to kids at a summer camp and homeless shelter. This is perfect for me, I thought.

So I applied.

Alan Silberberg won that year. Alan worked on Milo during his residency. And I'm delighted to say that Alan just won the Sid Fleischman Humor Award for that book.

I wouldn't be deterred. When applications came due, I applied again.

Guess who won that year?

Hope Anita Smith.

Perhaps a normal person would give up at this point, but really, no one could accuse me of being normal.

I applied again.

Guess who won. C'mon. Guess.

Keith McGowan.

Okay. Okay. I can take a hint. I decided not to apply anymore. It wasn't fun getting that letter saying I wasn't selected year after year.

But . . .

Who am I to argue with Ross Perot?

I applied one last time. In fact, I made a mistake with the deadline, had to make a mad dash to the post office and spend $18.45 to get my application materials there in time. $18.45!

Was it worth it?

Hmm. Can you guess who won the 2011 Children's Writer in Residence at the Thurber House?

Me!

I'm delighted to announce that I'm going to Columbus, OH for a month this summer and I'll live here . . .

I'm so excited about this summer adventure. Writing. Exploring Columbus. Working with the kids. Writing. Eating at this restaurant, owned by a guy I went to school with in Philadelphia. Writing. Meeting cool new friends. Checking out the library, zoo, gardens, parks, etc. Um, did I mention WRITING?

Persistence. Hmm.

Next time you feel like giving up . . . remember that you might be on the one yard line. (At least that what Ross Perot says.)

6-1/2 Ways to Create Suspense in Fiction by author APRIL HENRY

I'd keep you in suspense about today's post, but I'm too excited to share great info, a book giveaway and the author, April Henry, with you.

I picked up April's book, GIRL STOLEN, without knowing it would be filled with so much suspense that I'd ignore everything else to find out what happened next.

Cheyenne is sick and waiting under a comforter in the backseat of her stepmother's car. While her stepmother runs into the pharmacy to pick up medicine for Cheyenne, someone STEALS THE CAR, unintentionally kidnapping Cheyenne. Finding a way to escape is almost impossible because Cheyenne is BLIND! The stakes in this novel are continually raised. 6-1/2 WAYS TO CREATE SUSPENSE IN FICTION

By APRIL HENRY

1. Give your characters phobias or fears - and then make them face those fears. Afraid of heights? The final confrontation should take place on a rooftop. Afraid of repeating the same mistake? Give them the opportunity to get it right.

2. Play on universal fears: darkness, wild storms, something crawling on the skin, objects that cover other objects, being alone, being helpless or unable to act, something under the bed, closed or partially opened doors, hallways or tunnels leading to the unknown, cramped spaces, basements, attics, heights, crowds, disease, end times, death.

3. End each chapter with an unresolved issue. Have a character open a door or answer the phone, be confronted by someone with a gun, receive a mysterious letter, or make a decision not revealed immediately to the reader.

4. Look for passages that describe the weather, the landscape, the aftermath, meals or coffee, or travel. Then cut them.

5. Hurt a main character. Do it early so the reader knows no one is off limits. Even better, kill somebody off – preferably a likable character. Readers will be on the edge of their seats, knowing that anything at all - even something very bad - could happen.

6. Force the character to make a choice between two things she wants—or the lesser of two evils. Two loves. Two people to save (when only one can be). Addict/temptation. Married/temptation. Knows brother is murderer who won’t stop killing/but if she turns him in, he’ll go to death row.

6-1/2. Write scenes that personally make your palms sweat. Don’t stack the odds in your character's favor. Multiply the bad things he faces - and see what he does in response.

School Visit with Invisible Students

A big barrel of THANKS to Kim Maihack for inviting me to speak to the 5th, 6th and 7th grade students at ALL SAINTS.

I'd show you a photo of the 150 students sitting on the gym floor, but someone, ahem, forgot to take out her camera and snap said photo.

You'll have to take my word for it when I tell you this was one of the nicest group of kids I've ever spoken before . . . and I've spoken in front of some pretty awesome kids. They weren't only nice to me, they were nice to each other.

And they asked excellent questions when the presentation was over.

One girl asked, "Don't you ever get nervous speaking in front of so many people?"

I answered her honestly, "I was nervous before coming here to speak to you guys. But being nervous isn't such a bad thing. It makes me practice more."

I chatted with some of the students, signed books and finally remembered to get a snap of Kim, who runs the beautiful media center at ALL SAINTS . . .

And Eileen, who is Kim's assistant in the media center . . .

Thanks so much for having me. It was a real pleasure to spend time with your wonderful students, who are unfortunately, um, not pictured here.
