I was thinking about this Stephen King clip yesterday as I was reading one of the books that I'm supposed to teach next year. It was published in the late '50s and was a Newbery Medalist, but I can't stand it! I really dislike the writing and am baffled that it won a Newbery.
Hmm. I wonder what book that is. It's a shame you're supposed to teach something you're not passionate about, when there are so many excellent books that I'm sure you are. When I write, I try to strive for the BEST that's out there and pay little attention to the rest.

The book is Rifles for Watie. Luckily I have a lot of freedom in what I teach and if I want to change something, I've got a good rationale, and we've got the monies to get the books, I can do it. So I think I'm going to change the book.
I think that YA authors have to work harder now then they did when the genre first started; the audience is very discriminating. In fact, many of the YA novels that I've read a much better written than adult novels.
